Cinematographer Steve Yedlin, who has shot films such as Looper, San Andreas, and the upcoming Star Wars Episode 8, offers a new insight into the never-ending film vs digital debate.
Yedlin approaches it from the perspective that any film can be made to look any way, as long as the camera records enough image data, whether it be film or digital.
In the video below, he compares the Arri Alexa (the most popular digital camera among cinematographers) with film, and reveals that there is little different these days, because the Alexa has been made to emulate film as close as possible.
The end result is that the recorded image is pretty much the same. It’s what is done with the image after it’s been shot that matters.
